So, you've booked a family photo session with Sound Roots Photography—yay! Now you're wondering, "What do we need to do to prepare?" Don't worry, I’ve got you covered. Preparing for your session should feel exciting, not stressful. Let’s break it down so you and your family are ready to roll on photo day!

1. Sign the Contract & Pay the Deposit

First things first, let's handle the business side. Once you've picked a date, you’ll receive a contract that covers all the details about your session. This document ensures that everything is clear and outlined for both of us, so there are no surprises. After signing, don’t forget to pay the deposit to secure your spot. Easy peasy!

2. Style Your Family (Without Losing Your Mind)

Choosing outfits is probably one of the most fun—and sometimes stressful—parts of prepping for a photo session. The key? Don’t overthink it. Here are some easy tips to make sure everyone looks great while keeping it real:

  • Coordinate, Don’t Match: Avoid putting everyone in the same color. Instead, choose a color palette of 3-4 complementary shades. Think earth tones, neutrals, or soft pastels that fit the vibe of your session.
  • Be Yourself: Want to wear jeans and a t-shirt? Go for it. Your family’s personality should shine through in these photos, and wearing clothes you’re comfortable in will help that happen.
  • Layers and Textures: Adding layers like jackets, scarves, or hats, plus mixing different fabrics like knits or denim, gives your photos depth and visual interest.
  • Keep the Weather in Mind: If we’re shooting outdoors, plan for the temperature! Bring an extra jacket or blanket, just in case it’s chillier than expected.

And don't forget that all of my clients can use Style and Select, an easy online styling tool!

3. Mentally Prepare Your Family (Yes, Even Dad)

We want your family to feel relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera, which means prepping mentally is just as important as choosing outfits! Here’s how to get everyone in the right headspace for a stress-free session:

  • Talk About What to Expect: Especially if you have little ones, explain that the session will be fun! It’s not about standing still and saying "cheese." We’ll be playing, laughing, and capturing candid moments of your family just being you.
  • Relax Your Expectations: Real life is what we’re aiming to capture, so it’s okay if things don’t go perfectly. If your toddler runs around or someone needs a snack break, we’ll roll with it! Sometimes those in-between moments end up being the best shots.
  • No Need for Bribes: While it might be tempting to promise things like ice cream and candy if your kiddo does well, often I see this backfire during sessions. It's much more fun to let me engage your child and then celebrate with a surprise treat afterwards if you feel like it!
  • Go with the Flow: The best photos often happen when everyone is relaxed and in the moment. Trust that we’ll guide you and catch those natural, beautiful moments of connection.

4. Make Sure Everyone Is Rested & Fed

You know your family best, and a happy family is a well-fed, well-rested one. Make sure everyone’s had something to eat and some chill time before the session. If someone didn’t get their nap in (kids or adults!), try to plan around that so they can feel their best. Also know that if nap time didn't work out as planned, we can still roll with it. You'd be surprised how kids can hold it together for someone other than a primary care giver for a good while.

5. Include Personal Touches

You know I love incorporating personal props to tell your family’s unique story! Whether it’s a favorite family book, a musical instrument, or something that represents your hobbies, these details make your photos truly one-of-a-kind. Don’t be afraid to include them!

6. Trust the Process

Finally, just trust the process. I'm here to make this an easy, fun experience for your family. The more relaxed you are, the more your authentic connection will come through in your photos. I'll guide you when needed, but my goal is to document your family as you are, in this moment of your lives.

Ready for a Fun, Easy Session?

Remember, the most important thing is that your family is together, having fun, and just being yourselves. Let go of perfection and enjoy this time as a chance to connect with each other. You’ll end up with beautiful, real memories to treasure for years to come. It's that imperfectly perfect life, right? ;-)
