A question we hear a lot at Sound Roots Photography is, “How old should my baby be for their newborn session?” The answer is refreshingly simple—it depends on when you’re ready! But to help you better understand, let’s compare what’s typically expected in studio newborn sessions with what we do here: in-home lifestyle photography, where there’s no strict age window.

Studio Newborn Sessions: Not Our Style

Many photographers who offer studio sessions recommend that babies be photographed between 0-2 weeks old. Why? During this tiny window, newborns are typically extra sleepy and can be posed in those classic, curled-up positions without much fuss. It’s all about getting those perfectly posed, sleepy shots you’ve probably seen online or in baby books.

However, that rigid timing can be stressful for new parents. You’ve just welcomed a baby into your life, and suddenly there’s a rush to get them to a studio within days. Add to that the pressure of achieving the "perfect" pose, and it can feel more like an item on a checklist than an enjoyable experience.

But here’s the thing: we don’t do studio sessions at Sound Roots Photography. We believe that capturing your family’s real-life moments in the comfort of your home is far more meaningful—and much less stressful!

In-Home Lifestyle Sessions: It’s All About Real Life, At Any Age

At Sound Roots Photography, we take a more relaxed approach with our in-home lifestyle sessions. The best part? There’s no need to race against the clock to get your baby in front of the camera at a certain age. Whether your little one is 2 days old, 2 weeks, or even 2 months, we’re here to preserve the authentic moments that matter most to you.

Unlike studio sessions, where a sleepy baby is key, in-home sessions embrace whatever phase your baby is in. Is your newborn wide awake and curious? Perfect! Are they snuggled up in your arms or making funny faces? That’s what we’re here for. The focus is less on poses and more on the natural beauty of your everyday life—the feeding sessions, diaper changes, tiny yawns, and those little details that make your family unique.

You have the flexibility to schedule your session when it feels right for you—whether that’s during those early days when everything feels brand new or a little later when your baby has started showing off their budding personality. There’s no rush, and no “perfect” age to worry about.

My Own Experience

With both of my kids, my partner and I managed to look somewhat decent and put together in those early blissful moments in the hospital and a photographer kindly walked around and did a little mini session for us and our babies. I definitely wasn't with it enough with my first born to figure out how to invite a stranger into my home in the days when I was tracking how many pees, poops, and feedings my kid had. I definitely feel like by two weeks I would have been much more able to host a photographer in our home. Only reason we didn't do that with my first was because we were still in the thick of our remodel and my husband was still taping and mudding the walls of our house. The only area done was the nursery (that my kid never ended up sleeping in anyways, but I digress...). I so badly wish I had invited a professional to come document us then because that messy house was so fleeting! I barely documented it and now I really wish I could see us like that. Don't make the same mistake I did and prioritize a "picture perfect home" over real true moments documented in your special place in an extra special phase of life.

What Works Best for Your Family?

The beauty of in-home lifestyle photography is that it’s about documenting your family as you are, at any phase. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to when your session should be—it’s entirely up to you! Whether you want to document those first newborn days or wait until things settle down a bit, we’ll be there to photograph the moments that matter most.

At Sound Roots Photography, we’re all about creating a relaxed, comfortable environment where you can simply enjoy your time together. No rushing, no stressing—just real moments, beautifully documented in the place you call home.
